"I still was a pastor even though I was also a 9/11 family member. And from
the very beginning, I wanted to make sure that this was not going to be
something that turned me into looking for violence and retribution." - The
Rev. Myrna Bethke of Red Bank (N.J.) United Methodist Church.

Pastor seeks peace despite 9/11 hurt

RED BANK, N.J. (UMNS) - When the death of Osama bin Laden was announced in
May, the Rev. Myrna Bethke was awakened by a late-night call from a New
Zealand media outlet seeking her reaction. As the sister of one of the 2,977
victims of the Sept. 11 attacks and an advocate for reconciliation, she
often has been sought by the media. Her family's loss because of 9/11 has
not changed a lifelong commitment to peace.

Now-adults, they recall 9/11

NEW YORK (UMNS) - In 2001, Joseph Kurt Alexander, was 12 and living in
Greeley, Colo. "When 9/11 happened," he recalled, "it suddenly brought the
possibility of death into American life - something present everywhere else
in the world but not so much recognized here." Almost overnight, the
seventh-grader realized he was part of something greater than he was. How
did the events of Sept. 11 affect young people? United Methodist News
Service posed that question and heard back from several young adults. Here
   are their stories.

When cross and crescent meet

WOODRIDGE, Ill. (UMNS) - When Irshad Learning Center, a Muslim congregation
in Illinois, asked to use Woodridge United Methodist Church facilities for
fellowship and worship, it didn't take long for the church to say yes. Ten
years after terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on
Sept. 11, 2001, the interfaith friendship between Woodridge and Irshad
offers hope in the unpredictable seas of Christian-Muslim relations,
   Interpreter magazine reports.

The economy, faith and frustration

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - It was around July of 2009 when it really hit me:
I was in trouble, writes Aaron Cross, a 2009 college graduate. He shared his
thoughts last year on his struggles to find a full-time job in the tough job
market, and how his faith gave him peace in a time of turmoil. Fast-forward
a year: The job market isn't any better, and Aaron is still seeking
full-time employment. He continues to fill out applications and rely on his
   faith for strength and patience.

Faith leaders push to end bigotry

WASHINGTON (UMNS) - Jim Winkler, top executive, [23]United Methodist Board
of Church and Society, is among the national interfaith leaders who will
reiterate a call for faith communities to promote acceptance and end
religious bigotry. The event for the "[24]Shoulder to Shoulder: Standing
with American Muslims; Upholding America's Values" campaign will be at 11
a.m. Sept. 8 at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church. In addition to
recognizing families of Muslim victims of the terrorist attacks in New York
and Washington, the group will highlight four of the many religious
organizations that have led grassroots efforts to unite religious
communities across the country in the face of anti-Muslim sentiment.
