"I'm very confident that because of the generosity of the people who gave to
UMCOR... a lot of people did, in fact, benefit and maybe recovered faster
and in some cases, better." - Catherine Earl, United Methodist Committee on
   Relief.

United Methodist funds aid 9/11 healing

NEW YORK (UMNS) - United Methodists donated $20.8 million to a fund - aptly
named "Love in the Midst of Tragedy" - designed to create a response across
the denomination to the Sept. 11 attacks on New York's World Trade Center
and the Pentagon. The scope and nature of the events, along with the large
amount of resources available, made this a very different type of disaster
   for the relief agency.

Churches face flood, fire in Lee's wake

BASTROP, Texas (UMNS) - In the wake of Tropical Storm Lee, United Methodists
are contending with the damage of floods - and flames. The storm's heavy
rains cut a soggy path across Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia,
and its 50-mile-per-hour winds whipped up wildfires in parched Texas as well
   as parts of Louisiana.

UMCOR's 9/11 aid lifted Pentagon corridor

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (UMNS) - In the neighborhoods around the Pentagon, there
still are signs of the fallout of the terror attack 10 years ago. Signs of
ministry done in the area are less tangible, of course. But thanks to more
than $1.1 million from the United Methodist Committee on Relief in the form
of "Love in the Midst of Tragedy" grants after 9/11, United Methodists did
ministry and made an important impact in the area.

Church near ground zero hosts reflection

NEW YORK (UMNS) - [22]John Street United Methodist Church, the historic
congregation at 44 John Street near ground zero, will host a 10th
   anniversary of 9/11 "response and reflection" from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 8.
The evening will include an exhibition of paintings created by [23]Marjorie
Morrow in the aftermath of 9/11, accompanied by readings of original poems
by Drew University students. The exhibit will continue at John Street
   through September.

The idea was to use John Street as a place of prayer, reflection and witness
for the 10th anniversary, [24]explained the Rev. Jason Radmacher. "The
general way we have settled into observing 9/11 in recent years has been
pretty quiet," said Radmacher, who was assigned to the church in 2003. "We
knew we wanted to do something that would make the space available to the
congregation, to the neighborhood. To have Drew and the artist and John
Street working together, that really seemed like a nice combination."

Trust fund

BETHEL, Conn. (UMNS) - Lots of things conspire to erode mutual trust, writes
Ray Waddle in a column for Interpreter magazine. One is the wide gap between
rich and poor. Surely another is the daily clash of worldviews (on cable TV
and the Internet) that divide people into fuming ideological camps. However,
churchgoers, he contends, have a role in renewing trust.
