   "Disobedience to the (Book of) Discipline is the antithesis to holy
   conferencing and to our United Methodist way." - Clergy letter urging
   bishops to uphold publicly denomination's ban on same-sex unions.

Bishops urged to support same-sex union ban

   WOODLANDS, Texas (UMNS) - More than 200 United Methodist clergy and 350
   laity have signed letters urging the Council of Bishops to take a public
   stand supporting the denomination's standards on marriage and homosexuality.
   The letters respond to the pledges [18]at least 900 active and retired
   clergy across the United States signed this summer to bless same sex-unions.
   Both the clergy and laity letters say that the pledges put the unity and
   future of The United Methodist Church in jeopardy.

Sabbath honors dreams of young immigrants

   NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - Mercedes wants to be a nurse or a doctor. Michael
   wants to join the U.S. Marine Corps. Juan wants to be an entrepreneur and
   community leader. Ivan wants to be a military doctor and a cancer
   researcher. Lorella wants to be a lawyer and fight for social justice. Gaby
   wants to be a teacher. The one thing all these recent high school graduates
   have in common is that it is not possible for their dreams to come true in
   the United States.

Exploration 2011 registration open

   NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -[21]Registration is open for EXPLORATION 2011, an
   event for young adults who sense God's call to ordained ministry as a deacon
   or elder in The United Methodist Church. The event will be Nov. 11-13 in St.
   Louis, Mo. Sponsored by the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and
   Ministry, Exploration 2011 is open to young adults age 18 to 26. The
   registration fee will cover a two-night stay at the Millennium Hotel, meals
   and program fees. Updates and registration information will be posted on the
   [22]event website.



Impact Appalachia has an impact

   BEVERLY, KY. (UMNS) - More than 800 people from the Red Bird Missionary
   Conference and the Kentucky Annual (regional) Conference worked side by side
   to have an impact on the southeastern Kentucky counties served by Red Bird.
   People of all ages painted, worked carnival booths, planted gardens and did
   a host of other activities. Impact Appalachia was organized by United
   Methodist Communications in conjunction with the two conferences. Impact
   Appalachia is part of the Rethink Church initiative that uses outreach
   events to make a difference in the world beyond the church doors.

Last day for immigration survey

   NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - This is the last day to participate in the United
   Methodist News Service's survey on immigration. The survey ends Sept. 16.
   Its purpose is to gather opinions from United Methodists on this
   sometimes-contentious issue. The survey takes about 10 to 12 minutes to
   complete. It includes an opportunity to comment on the issue.
