Atlanta church's ribbons remember war dead ATLANTA (UMNS) - U.S. Army Capt. Brooks Askew takes a moment to study the thousands of gold, blue and green ribbons across his church's front lawn. Peachtree Road United Methodist Church's memorial honors the 6,400 members of the U.S. military who have died in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. (UMNS) - First United Methodist Church in Pryor will conduct an evangelism training conference from 9:30 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. Sept. 24. The Rev. Bob Crossman, director of new church starts and congregational advancement at the Arkansas Annual (regional) Conference, will be among the presenters. Workshops include "Needs-based Evangelism," "Small Church Evangelism," "Fishing for Children" and "How to Share Your Faith." The cost is $10 per person. To enroll, email [18]Bob Pierson. 'Preach to save lives,' board urges WASHINGTON (UMNS) - Domestic violence, which affects millions of people, can be addressed on several fronts in coming weeks. The United Methodist Board of Church and Society is urging churchgoers to contact their members of Congress to avoid budget cuts for legislation aimed at curbing domestic violence and urging pastors to speak from their pulpits about domestic violence to save lives. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. [19]Read more» Church conference on "Living With Drought" JOHNSON CITY, Texas (UMNS) - Climatologists forecast central Texas' drought will continue through next year. [20]First United Methodist Church in Johnson City will host a free conference on living with drought - a slow- moving disaster - at 9 a.m. Oct. 15. Blanco County Disaster Response Group is organizing the event, and Texas state climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon will be among the speakers. Other speakers will talk about the effects of the ongoing drought on water supply, gardens, trees and wildlife and discuss fire safety and protection.
