3107 Edition September 12-18, 2011 General Assembly News PCT joins TAUNA in New York in voicing Taiwanese people’s plea for UN membership Reported by Sam Lee Written by Lydia Ma Taiwan’s desire to be a member of the United Nations was conveyed on various occasions in the US recently when PCT representatives joined Taiwan United Nations Alliance (TAUNA) officers on a campaign to promote this issue and raise awareness. The delegation visited American Institute in Taiwan Washington Headquarters, World Council of Churches Liaison Office, and other organizations and held a promotional event at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza. This tour was significant in presenting PCT’s perspective to the US on this issue because other Taiwanese officials are also visiting the U.S. this month to garner support for both presidential candidates ahead of next year’s elections. One committee member from PCT Church and Society Committee underscored that the visit to WCC Liaison Office, which is located inside the UN building in New York, was a breakthrough and quite symbolic. The purpose for the visit to this WCC office also concerned Taiwan’s entry to the United Nations. TAUNA’s Chief Officer and former PCT General Secretary William J.K. Lo said that Taiwan’s future should be decided by Taiwanese people alone. Though peace between the two countries is a common goal, Chinese authorities have yet to respect Taiwan’s sovereignty. “Peace without justice is false peace!” he said, adding that since President Ma and government organizations are reluctant to advocate Taiwan’s sovereignty, it’s up to civil society organizations to do it. In view of the international community’s appeasement of China whenever it oppresses Taiwan, Taiwan must fend for itself and continue to raise awareness about this issue or risk being forgotten by the rest of the world soon. ******************** Taiwan Church News is published weekly in Taiwan's local languages.
