Church Ministry News

2 churches blessed by 100 kg donation of rice

Reported by Chiou Kuo-rong

As a church ministering primarily to the poor and the homeless, Shengshan
Church in New Taipei City has oftentimes been in the red. However, this
3-year-old church and its ministries have not only remained stable, but also
expanded to Nantou in central Taiwan.

Recently, Shengshan Church heard that another church in southern Taiwan,
Shankung Church in Pingtung City, which offers 2 meals a day to homeless people
was running out of supplies and cash and on the verge of closing down its
ministries.

Upon hearing this news, Shengshan Church immediately sent more than 100
Taiwanese kilograms of white rice (or 60 kg) to Shankung Church to help it get
through hard times. Chen thought it was only fitting that his church should
help out as both churches share similar ministries, and his church later also
decided to donate rice to Shankong church every month.

Pastor Chen Yanpu from Shengshan Church told Taiwan Church News that despite
his church’s financial challenges, many charities have consistently donated
material resources since the church’s inception. Among these charitable
organizations are some Buddhist organizations that agree and support the
church’s ministry. These Buddhist organizations were the ones to donate rice,
which has enabled the church provide meals and give extra rice to unemployed
people and poor families. This food ministry became a means for the church to
reach out to poor families and relieve them from the pressure of putting food
on the table – literally – every day, which in turn helped them win some time
and find better jobs that’d eventually help the family get back on track.

Chen also reported that the church received some help from neighbors who were
impressed by the church’s ministry. Some neighbors even darkened the door of a
church for the first time in their lives to attend a service because they were
touched by the acts of kindness from Shengshan Church.

Chen remarked that his church also received a lot of support and material
supplies from a few churches during its early days, when most churches
disagreed with Shengshan Church’s philosophy and ministry. It is through their
help and the help of volunteers that the church was able to survive and now
become a source of help to another church with a similar ministry.
