Giants defensive tackle puts God first

   STANLEY, N.C. (UMNS) â âItâs hard to understand what success is if youâve
   never seen it," said [19]Chris Canty, defensive tackle (No. 99) for the New
   York Giants, the 2012 Super Bowl winners. âItâs hard to understand what
   accountability is if youâve never seen it. Itâs hard to understand what
   responsibility is if youâve never seen it.â His mom, the Rev. Shirley L.
   Canty, a United Methodist pastor in North Carolina, has more reason to be
   proud of her son than his big win.

Africaâs pioneering clergywomen honored

   MUTARE, Zimbabwe (UMNS) â More than 300 African clergywomen honored
   pioneering clergywomen and heard speakers urge them to unite and support
   each other up during the four-day African Clergywomenâs Consultation at
   Africa University. The group honored 18 United Methodist women as first and
   pioneering clergywomen in their respective episcopal areas during the Feb.
   1-4 gathering.

Helmer 9th president of Baldwin-Wallace

   BEREA, Ohio (UMNS) â Robert C. Helmer, president of Lourdes University in
   Sylvania, Ohio, will be the ninth president of United Methodist-related
   [22]Baldwin-Wallace College. The appointment is effective July 1. He will
   succeed Richard W. Durst, the Baldwin-Wallace president since 2006, who
   retires June 30. When founded in 1845, Baldwin-Wallace College was one of
   the first colleges to admit students without regard to race or gender.
   Baldwin-Wallace serves about 3,000 full-time undergraduates, 600 part-time
   students in evening and weekend programs and more than 700 graduate students
   in education and business.

Duke Divinity School names new dean

   DURHAM, N.C. (UMNS) â the Rev. Richard B. Hays has been appointed dean of
   Duke Divinity School, one of the 13 United Methodist seminaries. Hays, the
   George Washington Ivey Professor of New Testament, has been serving as dean
   on a two-year basis since 2010. Hays came to Duke in 1991 from the faculty
   of the Yale Divinity School, where he received a master of divinity degree.
   He earned a Ph.D. at Emory University. An ordained United Methodist elder,
   Hays has preached in settings ranging from rural Oklahoma churches to
   London's Westminster Abbey.

Liberian United Methodists honor Johnson Sirleaf

   GBARNGA CITY, Liberia (UMNS) â Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was
   honored Feb. 12 by the United Methodist Church in Liberia. Johnson Sirleaf,
   a recent Nobel Peace Prize winner, received the âUnited Methodist Par
   Excellenceâ Service Award in recognition of her leadership abilities and
   commitment to God. She is a member of First United Methodist Church in
   Monrovia.
