Students at Presbyterian School Clean up Stream

Rabun Gap-Nacoochie School
RABUN GAP, Ga.-Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School students, faculty and staff spent
the afternoon of May 6 improving a section of Sutton Branch stream, which
runs through the 1,300-acre campus of this northeast Georgia prep school
that is related to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
"We'll fence back our cattle and then do some replanting of native
vegetation and work on the stream bed itself," said environmental science
teacher Terry Seehorn. The project is part of a comprehensive conservation
plan for the entire campus, which includes pasture land for the school's
Limousin cattle farm and its equestrian program.
Nearly all 175 students in the Upper School, grades 9-12, worked May 6.
The Middle School, with 60 students in grades 7 and 8, will also spend an
afternoon on the project later this month. "Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School has
an institutional commitment to environmental stewardship," said headmaster
Greg Zeigler. "By the time school is out at the end of May, every student
and every teacher and staff member will have gotten their feet wet,
literally, in this conservation project."
Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School has enlisted the help of three agencies to
address environmental issues. Doug Towery, district conservationist for
the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Blairsville, Ga., is working
with the school to create a conservation plan.Wayne Swank and other
scientists at Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratories, Otto, N.C., will monitor the
effects of the Sutton Branch project on water runoff and quality and on
soil properties. The Little Tennessee Watershed Association, chaired by
Brian Hyder, also of Otto, has provided financial support for this project.
