Book Donations Benefit Charlotte Children
CHARLOTTE--Those brightly colored boxes at the convention center are
filling up as General Assembly attenders arrive from across the country
bringing children's books to be used by Charlotte children and their
families.
When the collection is completed tomorrow, the books will go to one of
13 Presbyterian Churches in the area to be sorted and distributed where
they are most needed. The recipients will be children involved in a
number of civic programs aimed at improving their quality of education.
These programs include homeless children, children with special needs,
ethnic minority children, high-risk infants and preschoolers, children
needing after-school tutoring and families in crisis. Some programs take
place in Presbyterian churches, but programs in schools, other churches and
community centers will all benefit.
The project originated when the Office of General Assembly asked
Charlotte's Committee on Local Arrangements (COLA) if they would propose
a way the Assembly could say thank you to the city for hosting. Both OGA
and COLA agreed this project was most appropriate since the Assembly is
celebrating 1998 as The Year with Education and highlighting the need for
Presbyterians to become involved in the education of youth and children in
local communities.
All Assembly participants were asked to bring new or used children's
books when they packed to come to Charlotte. Each book will be given a
bookplate that identifies it is a gift from the 210th General Assembly held
in Charlotte.
