Church in Philippines - Highlighted at Breakfast
by Jane Hines
CHARLOTTE, N.C.--The United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP), an
organic union of Presbyterian and other Protestant denominations since
1948, was the focus of presentations at the Worldwide Ministries Division
(WMD) breakfast on Thursday, June 18. Division director Marian McClure
introduced UCCP Bishop Hilario Gomez, who spoke to those attending about
the significant and meaningful presence of this church of 1.4 million
members among a population of 60,477,000 who are predominantly Catholic.
Bishop Gomez said the UCCP is small but influential in government.
They proclaim the whole gospel to the whole person , with a special
outreach ministry to young adults and tribal people who have been pushed
into the mountains and exploited there by outside mining interests. He
said he is returning to his home island to concentrate on peacemaking.
There were prayers for the mission work and mission personnel listed
at each table. A teaser performance by Thuma Mina Mission Theatre Company
was presented.
Dr. McClure announced that the division is planning three conferences
for the fall of l999, building on the l997 conference "Congregations in
Global Mission" held in St. Louis. The l999 conferences will be held on
three subsequent weekends in October and November in three regions of the
country. "We are eager to hear more mission stories from more
congregations and to offer the interaction with WMD staff that we hear
Presbyterians requesting," she said.
