    GA Committee on Mission Coordination and Budgets send report to

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--The 210th General Assembly (1998) agreed with the 
recommendation of its Mission Coordination and Budgets Committee Wednesday 
to continue the Task Force on Churchwide Compensation Policy Guidelines for 
four months.  This will cost an estimated $29,700 in per capita funds. 
    At the same time, the Assembly referred the guidelines back to the task 
force with the comments that they "re-evaluate the deletion of the minimum 
wage clause," and "consider wage equity principles and formula guidelines 
regarding salary ranges...." 
    Also referred to the task force were Overture 98-52 with two minor 
amendments and Overture 98-61.  Overture 98-52 from the Presbytery of San 
Gabriel would direct the General Assembly Council (GAC) to follow current 
guidelines in offering compensation to the GAC executive director.  GAC 
chair Fred Denson assured the Assembly committee Tuesday that the 
compensation package being offered the executive director does fall within 
the current guidelines. 
    Overture 98-61 from the Presbytery of Albany calls on the GAC to set a 
maximum salary for all employees of 150 percent of the median salary of all 
installed pastors.  Since this would set a cap on salaries below some 
current salaries, the overture advocate from that presbytery recommended 
they set a cap without necessarily using the 150 percent figure. 
    Along with the two overtures, the Assembly referred to the task force 
Communication 98-35 concerning these overtures from the Advisory Committee 
on Social Witness Policy and the Advocacy Committee for Women's Concerns.
