             Pre-School Sexuality Curriculum Approved

                          by Midge Mack

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--The report of the Committee on Christian Education and
Curriculum Publishing went the same way on the floor of the Assembly
Thursday afternoon as it did in committee:- approval of an overture adding
two questions to the statistical report form, approval of relevant
narrative of Congregational Ministries Division and approval of all
responses to referrals, (statements that a curriculum has been published
as requested), except one.
The sticky wicket was the final response to a referral from the 205th
(1993) Assembly which mandated a human sexuality curriculum for pre-school
children and their parents. The question of approval focused on, not the
curriculum itself, but on the parents' guide and the guide for
congregations that accompany it.
The committee had recommended approval after lengthy debate, but a
minority report, submitted with the committee's report, brought the same
lengthy debate to the floor. The process produced a close final vote, with
approval of the response 288-249. The study guides stand as they have been
printed and are in use across the church.
