              Assembly Authorizes Advisory Committee
                to Examine Church Abortion Policy

                         by Julian Shipp

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--The 210th General Assembly (1998) authorized the Advisory
Committee on Social Witness Policy (ACSWP) to examine the denomination's
policy on abortion Thursday evening through the Assembly Committee on
Health and Educational Issues.
By a vote of 307-220 with one abstention, the Assembly approved a
substitute motion for Overture 98-13 regarding abortion and women's
reproductive rights. The substitute motion reads: "That (ACSWP) be directed
to assess the current implementation of the General Assembly's policy on
abortion and report its findings to the 212th General Assembly (2000)."
The financial implications of ACSWP's report are approximately $15,000,
said newly-elected moderator Douglas W. Oldenburg. Overture 98-13, from
Central Florida Presbytery, proposed the Assembly continue to assert the
many statements of the General Assembly about the rights of women
(including pre-born women) and the detrimental effects that abortion may
have on women.
Action on Overture 98-13 on implementation of the denomination's church
abortion policy was pending Thursday due to an arrested Assembly docket.
