Council asks for focus on challenge of Christian education
GENEVA, 23 June 1998 (lwi) - The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Project
Committee approved 112 mission, development and communications projects
totaling some USD 12 million. In a report to the council from the
Department for Mission and Development (DMD), the projects for 1998 will
include USD 5.2 million in Africa projects, USD 4.2 million in Latin
America, USD 1.4 million in Asia and USD 1.2 million in Europe.
The LWF Council recommended that the general secretary come up with a plan
to give attention to Christian education through the LWF-DMD. The member
churches have been asked "to identify and address the challenges that the
21st century presents to Christian education."
Due to financial constraints, the position of secretary for Christian
education was not filled from 1995-1997, but the Ninth Assembly's call to
member churches to "further Christian education which is contextual and
also prophetic" led to the proposal that this function again be activated.
The proposal asks experts in member churches "to study and discuss new
challenges, directions and emphases of DMD's Christian education and
communication programs and work with regional communication organizations
and Christian education networks to strengthen the holistic ministries of
the churches locally."
