"It isn't a whole lot of fun to pay your own way to Venezuela,
sleep in a
hammock, eat boiled fish and get dirty digging ditches in the heat.
But you
get back way more than you put in it." â Morgan Green on the mission
work he
                       has done since his retirement.

Mission trips enrich man's retirement

OKLAHOMA CITY (UMNS) â At 57, Morgan Green discovered how it feels
when the
newness wears off of retirement. But he found the sense of purpose
he missed
from his career by volunteering for mission trips with Chapel Hill
United
Methodist Church. Now 70, he estimates he has been on 25 mission
trips in
   the past 11 years.

End religious bigotry, faith leaders say

WASHINGTON (UMNS) â A diverse group of religious leaders has
called upon
other U.S. spiritual leaders to join them in condemning
"derision,
misinformation or outright bigotry directed against any religious
group in
this country." Prompted by the debate over plans to build an
Islamic
community center and mosque in the vicinity of ground zero in New
York, the
religious leaders, including United Methodists, said they were
"profoundly
distressed and deeply saddened" by recent attacks on Muslims.

Communities revive monastic practices

DALLAS (UMNS) â New Day, a community of United Methodists, falls
within a
quiet but growing movement dubbed "new monasticism." The
Christian
communities vary, but most share a common rule of life that
includes
disciplined contemplation, justice practices, support for celibate
singles
among monogamous married couples and their children, hospitality,
"humble
submission to Christ's body, the church" and geographic proximity.

Bishop James K. Mathews, passionate missionary, dies

WASHINGTON (UMNS) â Bishop James K. Mathews, who had a lifelong
passion for
mission work and evangelism, died Sept. 8. He was 97. The
son-in-law of
noted evangelist E. Stanley Jones, Mathews traveled the world in
support of
Methodist mission work. He made more than 60 trips to India, 28 to
Africa,
16 to Latin America and a dozen to Korea and Japan during his
lifetime.

Starting in 1960, he served as bishop of New England for 12 years
and the
Washington D.C. area for eight. In 1985, Mathews was called
out of
retirement to serve as bishop in Zimbabwe for a year. He helped to
establish
Africa University. He then served another two years as bishop of
the Albany
Area in upstate New York. He is survived by his wife of 70 years,
Eunice;
his daughters, Anne Mathews-Younes and Janice Stromsem, and son,
J. Stanley
Mathews, as well as six grandchildren and soon to be
three
   great-grandchildren. A full-length obituary will
appear
   at [19]www.umc.org on Sept. 9.
