Millions of nets to cover Sierra Leone

   SHEMINGO, Sierra Leone (UMNS) â Isata Sesay, who will be 3 years 
old on
   Sept. 15, has suffered repeated attacks of malaria since birth. 
United
   Methodists are working to help children like Isata. The church is
   contributing 648,000 bed nets in November as part of a larger 
nationwide
   distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets in Sierra Leone.

Memorial service set for Bishop Mathews

   WASHINGTON (UMNS) â Retired United Methodist Bishop James K. 
Mathews, who
   died Sept. 8 at the age of 97, will be remembered at a memorial 
service
   scheduled at 11 a.m. Sept. 25 at Metropolitan Memorial United 
Methodist
   Church, 3401 Nebraska Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. A luncheon will 
follow
   the service. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made on behalf of 
missionary
   work in India through the E. Stanley and Mabel Jones Foundation at 
the
   General Board of Global Ministries, 475 Riverside Drive, New York, 
NY 10115.

Providing basics for Pakistan's flood survivors

   DUBAIR, Pakistan (UMNS) â With its steep valleys and isolated 
villages, the
   northern Pakistani district of Kohistan is a tough, hardscrabble 
place, and
   already residents coping with Pakistanâs recent devastating floods 
are
   worried about the coming winter, Chris Herlinger of Church World 
Service
   reports. In the past week, Church World Service â a partner of The 
United
   Methodist Church â has provided medical care for hundreds in 
several locales
   in Kohistan and surrounding districts through its mobile health 
units. The

United Methodist to preach at Scotland event

   GLASGOW, Scotland (UMNS) â The Rev. Larry Pickens will preach 
Sept. 12
   during  a national ecumenical service marking Racial Justice 
Sunday in
   Scotland. Sponsored by Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, 
the service
   will mark the launch of a new group, Minority Ethnic Churches 
Together in
   Scotland. Pickens, pastor of Memorial United Methodist Church in 
White
   Plains,  N.Y.,  is a member of the World Council of Churches 
Executive
   Committee, which is meeting in Scotland this month.

Desert Southwest Conference observes âRelevance Sundayâ

   PHOENIX (UMNS) â On Sept. 12, churches across the Desert Southwest 
Annual
   (regional) Conference will collect offerings for Relevance Sunday, 
which
   supports  young  adult  ministries  in  the conference and the 
Western
   Jurisdiction.
   One of the ministries the offering supports is Relevance X, an 
annual,
   conference-wide  event  geared toward growing young adult ministry 
and
   empowering young people with the skills and the voice to be 
leaders in the

Alert: Upper Room not involved with movie

   NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â A movie titled âI AM,â which is 
scheduled for
   release this fall, currently is being promoted to churches in 
North America
   by  its production company, âUpper Room Multimedia.â The Upper 
Room, a
   division of the United Methodist Board of Discipleship, released a 
statement
   that  it  wants  churches  to know it is in no way affiliated with 
the
   California-based  production  company.  The Upper Room Ministries 
is a
   Nashville-based ministry.
