(UMNS) â As pundits, politicians and people around the world debated whether the pastor of a small fringe congregation in Gainesville should or should not burn the Quran, members of the Gainesville Interfaith Forum decided a more pointed response was needed. The three-hour âA Gathering for Peace, Understanding and Hopeâ Sept. 10 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Gainesville was their answer. The full story is available [16]here. Former pastor faces murder charges JACKSON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (UMNS) â A former United Methodist pastor was arrested and charged on Sept. 14 with murder and tampering with evidence in the death of his wife, according to the Pocono Record in northeastern Pennsylvania. Bishop Peggy Johnson of the Eastern Pennsylvania told the newspaper that A.B. Schirmer surrendered his credentials on Nov. 14, 2008, when police started investigating the death of his second wife, Betty Jean Schirmer. She died on July 15, 2008. According to the Pocono Record, police are also investigating Schirmer in the death of his first wife, Jewel Schirmer. She died in April 1999 from a traumatic brain injury due to an alleged fall down a flight of stairs. Schirmer had formerly served as a licensed local pastor, with appointments in eight churches from 1970 to 2008. Bishop Johnsonâs complete statement to the newspaper is available [17]here.
