"The new census bureau figures are distressing in a country as
creative and
prosperous as the United States." â Thomas Kemper, chief executive
of the
United Methodist Board of Global Ministries.

Mission: Add colleges to anti-malaria crusade

MEADVILLE, Pa. (UMNS) â The Rev. Sarah Roncolato isn't hoping for
much. She
just wants to turn someone's life upside down and transform them
into lean,
   mean, Jesus-loving, mosquito-killing machines.

population in 2009 lived in poverty, up from 13.2 percent the
previous year.

Blog: Is the connection fraying?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â In his blog, "Church, Culture and
Media," the Rev.

Bärbel Bohley, Methodist Peace Prize winner, dies

FRANKFURT, Germany (UMNS) â German civil rights activist Bärbel
Bohley died
Sept. 11 at the age of 65 from lung cancer. In 1991, she received
the World
Methodist Peace Prize, an annual award begun in 1977 by the World
Methodist
Council. Previous recipients include President Jimmy Carter,
Mikhail
Gorbachev, Nelson Mandela and Sister Helen Prejean.

Since the mid-1980s, Bohley had been a visible and unrelenting
voice and
advocate for human and civil rights. In 1985, she was one of the
co-founders
of the Initiative for Peace and Human Rights, and also helped
found New
Forum, a political movement in East Germany formed in the months
leading up
to the collapse of the East German state. Even after German
unification, she
raised her voice and continued to call for justice and human
dignity to
   become a reality for all.
