Fight against malaria must go on, bishop tells UN

   NEW YORK (UMNS) - During a round of public appearances that 
included
   speaking at the United Nations, Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton urged
   collaboration in efforts to beat malaria, a disease that kills an 
estimated
   800,000 children in Africa each year.

   of clergy in The United Methodist Church pursuing a new kind of 
pastoral
   ministry - "intentional interim minister."

Talbert Leadership Institute seeks applicants

   NASHVILLE,  Tenn. (UMNS) - The pilot event of the Bishop Melvin 
George
   Talbert Leadership Institute will be Jan. 7-9, 2011, in Nashville.
   The program will engage young laity and clergy in enhancing their 
leadership
   potential. Coaches, who will be clergy and lay, male and female, 
and young
   adult,  will  be  available  for one-on-one conversations, small 
group
   discussions and other configurations to mentor the participants.
   The Institute will begin with 10 students. Applicants must be 
between the
   ages of 18 and 30, members of The United Methodist Church for at 
least two
   years,  and  provide  an essay, written or on video/DVD, sharing 
their
   background,  future  goals  and why they are interested in the 
Talbert
   Leadership Institute. The deadline for applying is Oct. 8.
