"I want young people to start taking care of their bodies knowing
that they
are a temple to the Holy Spirit. If they can develop good habits it
will be
a blessing that can last a lifetime." â New York Area Bishop
Jeremiah Park.

How churches can protect children

(UMNS) â Once upon a time, when you needed a Sunday school
teacher, a youth
group volunteer or a camp counselor, you just recruited someone.
When they
said, "Yes," your job was done.

Times have changed. Stories of child abuse make the headlines, and
churches
are not exempt. The 1996 General Conference mandated all annual
(regional)
conferences to adopt policies to safeguard children and youth, and
the Safe
   Sanctuaries program was created.

The Missouri Conference is a leader in Safe Sanctuaries.

New York bishop and others run for mission

HARTFORD, Conn. (UMNS) â It will be hard to catch Bishop Jeremiah
Park this
weekend unless you are also running in a 5K race. For the third
year in a
row, Park is joining thousands on Oct. 9 in the ING Hartford
Marathon in
Connecticut. He and other United Methodists will be raising money
for
missions and raising awareness of healthy activity.

10-Fold shows mission in action via technology

NEW YORK (UMNS) â For 10 days starting this Sunday, United
Methodists and
others will be able to see a live commissioning service for
missionaries and
cooking demonstrations with sustainable farm-grown ingredients.
They can
hear missionaries tell about their work in the field.

This is all possible because of an online event called 10-Fold,
which
launches Oct. 10 and lasts for 10 days. Using Skype technology,
downloadable
podcasts, streaming videos and online chats, visitors to
the
website [19]10-Fold.org will connect directly with missionaries
and selected
ministry projects supported through The Advance, the
designated-giving
program of The United Methodist Church.

Higher Ed top executive to retire

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â The Rev. Jerome King Del Pino, the top
executive
of the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry,
announced
Oct. 7 that after considerable deliberation and prayer, he will
retire Oct.
                                    15.

Del Pino, an elder in the New England Annual Conference, was elected
general
secretary of the Board of Higher Education and Ministry in 2001 and
is now
concluding his third and final term. Prior to joining the board,
Del Pino
served as superintendent of the Metropolitan Boston/South District
from 1997
                                  to 2001.

John Lesesne, the agency's treasurer and chief financial officer,
will serve
as interim general secretary while the board's search committee
completes
the search for a new general secretary.

Cyclist killed while on transcontinental bike ride for oil-spill
victims

GULF BREEZE, Miss. (UMNS) â The funeral for a man killed while
cycling to
raise money for families affected by the BP oil spill will be held
at Gulf
Breeze United Methodist Church Oct. 11. Roger Grooters, 66, was hit
by a
truck while cycling. He was more than 2,000 miles into a
transcontinental
bike ride that began Sept. 10 near San Diego. The Rev. Jack Kale,
pastor of
the church's Worship at the Water service, which Grooters and his
wife
attended, encouraged people to consider donating to the cause he
was
promoting. "That way, maybe they can help him finish what he
started," Kale
                                   said.
