Written by Staff Reports April 1, 2011
The UCC?s StillSpeaking Magazine won best magazine March 31 at the Religious Communicators Council DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards presentation in Little Rock, Ark. ?The covers of this magazine are so striking they would draw attention from across the room,? said the judges, who called the publication a ?great concept? and ?highly readable.? ?The high quality of production packages the excellent content beautifully,? they added.
?This is exactly the response we hoped to achieve,? said the Rev. Gregg Brekke, StillSpeaking Magazine editor. ?We wanted to make something beautiful, compelling and inviting ?? showing the best of the UCC to inspire and inform.?
In his acceptance remarks, Brekke noted the transitions that have taken place over the last two years in communications at the UCC. Recalling the 25-year history of the United Church News newspaper and its move to a web-only resource 18 months ago, he said, ?I?d like to thank all those who discerned and believed with us. It took a leap of faith to launch this new magazine.? "StillSpeaking being named best magazine by the Religion Communicators Council is a testament to the vision of a dedicated staff who believed that a new print piece that made a clear, compelling case for the distinctive values and voice of the United Church of Christ could thrive, if it stayed true to that high aim," said the Rev. J. Bennett Guess, publisher. "Thanks to the dedication of editor Gregg Brekke and many others, the StillSpeaking Magazine is more than a good read; it's an inspiring religious experience, with each turn of the pa ge." Both 2010 editions of StillSpeaking Magazine garnered additional awards for their respective photo essays: the Spring/Summer edition earned an award for its ?Belonging? theme and the Fall/Winter edition received recognition for its theme of ?Blessing.? ?When we partnered with UCC to launch StillSpeaking, our number one goal was to make a piece that was full of life and impactful, that would be timeless,? said Ellen Moriarty, creative director at The Shamrock Companies, who designs and prints the magazine. ?We are thrilled to be just one part of the team that has been able to take UCC?s vision for the publication and turn it into reality.? The Rev. W. Evan Golder, editor emeritus of United Church News, was also present and received an Award of Merit for his work on the Kendal at Home publication, ?Le Cha t.?
