Ivorian group barricaded near battle ABIDJAN, Côte d'Ivoire (UMNS) - United Methodist Bishop Benjamin Boni and others were locked inside the church's radio station building in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, on April 6 as fighting continued around the presidential palace nearby. The radio station is in the same compound as the bishop's residence, regional church offices and Jubilee United Methodist Church. (UMNS) - Annual conference time is approaching, and United Methodist representatives are getting ready to debate issues - and to reconnect with friends and colleagues. But in most conferences, the action goes far beyond the meeting room. In addition to electing General Conference delegates, ordaining new clergy and remembering deceased colleagues, United Methodists plan to reach out in ministry with the poor, strive for healthier lifestyles and tackle other social issues. [19]Read story and post a comment» April 12 webcast highlights global mission sites NEW YORK (UMNS) - A live April 12 webcast will highlight United Methodist evangelism and new church development in more than a dozen countries around the world. The broadcast will originate from the spring meeting of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries in Stamford, Conn. The event - which can be viewed from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Eastern Time at [20]gbgm-umc.org/live - will open with a short video clip, followed by a fast-paced "talk-show" format of onsite interviews; live electronic links to sites in Cameroon, Thailand, Vietnam, Russia and Honduras; and special music. The focus will be on new congregational development in mission initiatives spread across Africa, Asia, Central America and Eastern Europe/Eurasia. "Global Ministries is aggressively engaged in developing 400 new congregations outside the United States in a four-year period beginning at the start of 2009, and we are well over halfway there," said Thomas Kemper, the mission board's chief executive. "We want to share this good news with the United Methodist people and with the world at large. We want to share the voices and images of the church as it grows in grace, size and community service in many cultures." Lazarus Sunday urges prayer to combat HIV/AIDS NEW YORK (UMNS) - Lazarus Sunday, April 10, is an interfaith opportunity for people to pray for efforts to eradicate HIV/AIDS, particularly affecting children in Africa, and the healing of those living with or affected by the pandemic. ONE, a global grassroots advocacy organization working to fight extreme poverty and preventable disease, is sponsoring the event. The "Lazarus Effect" refers to the turnaround people living with AIDS experience when they receive anti-retroviral treatments. [21]Churches interested in participating can sign up on the Lazarus Sunday website. Since the early 1980s, the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries has responded to the HIV/AIDS crisis through programs of awareness, care and support. One hundred percent of every gift to the Global AIDS Fund, [22]UMCOR Advance #982345, will support the effort. Church groups express concern over Libya GENEVA (UMNS) - The World Council of Churches, Conference of European Churches and the Churches' Commission for Migrants in Europe have expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Libya. [23]In a joint statement, the three expressed appreciation for the various governments and aid agencies providing assistance to people fleeing the conflict in Libya, but added that the response needs to be broadened "to provide aid and protection to refugees, migrant workers and other people at risk, and to enhance efforts to find peaceful and just solutions to the crisis in Libya."
