Summit tackles questions about church future

   NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — Church members gathered at 1,000 sites around the
   world to participate in the Leadership Summit webcast on April 6. It was the
   first chance for many to hear how denominational leaders plan to carry out
   the recommendations in the [17]Call to Action Steering Team’s final
   report to increase vital congregations.

   NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — The United Methodist Church Leadership Summit,
   webcast from Nashville, is archived at the Leadership Summit website . To
   watch, click on [19]Live Stream.

   Viewers are encouraged to participate in the Leadership Summit Survey, which
   will remain available until midnight Central Daylight Time on April 10. A
   summary of findings will be posted on April 12 on the Leadership Summit
   website.

United Methodist students pray for Japan

   ASHLAND, Va. (UMNS) — Taylor Anderson, 24, was living her dream as a teacher
   in Ishinomaki, Japan, when she became the first-reported fatality of a U.S.
   citizen in the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan. Her alma
   mater, Randolph-Macon College, is among many of the 121 United
   Methodist-related schools and colleges with ties to Japan.

United Methodist communicators honored

   LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (UMNS) — United Methodist communicators received 37
   awards, including four Best-in-Class plaques, as the [22]Religion
   Communicators Council honored its members on March 31. Presentation
   of [23]107 DeRose-Hinkhouse Awards came on opening day of the interfaith
   association’s annual convention.

   Christie R. House (pictured at left), editor of New World Outlook, the
   mission magazine published by the United Methodist Board of Global
   Ministries, picked up three Best-in-Class awards. She won for the
   periodicals-single publication, writing for publication and Internet
   communication classes.

   A team of communicators from Global Ministries and United Methodist
   Communications earned the fourth Best-in-Class award for the integrated
   marketing campaign for “10-Fold.” Contributing to the project were Jay
   Rollins, Hal Sadler, Ron Underberg, Darcy Quigley and Brenda Carr from the
   Global Ministries’ staff and Jan Snider of United Methodist Communications.

   Twenty-two awards of excellence and 11 certificates of merit went to
   writers, producers, designers, photographers and videographers from United
   Methodist agencies, annual (regional) conferences and related publications.



Baldwin-Wallace president to retire

   BEREA, Ohio (UMNS) — Richard W. Durst, president of United Methodist-related
   Baldwin-Wallace College, has announced that he will retire at the end of the
   2011-12 academic year. Durst became the eighth president of Baldwin-Wallace
   in 2006. During his tenure, he helped lead the college’s most ambitious
   fundraising campaign, resulting in $97 million for building construction,
   renovations and scholarships. Paul Carleton, chair of the college’s board of
   trustees, said the board would hold a national search during the coming
   months for Baldwin-Wallace’s ninth president.
