“For me, it’s not just an internal commitment; it’s an external
commitment,”— Michael Scott Vickery on becoming a home missioner.

Set apart, lay people vow a life of service

NEW YORK (UMNS) — Sitting in a church pew one day, Laura Draughon Kirby
realized she wanted to merge her work-related passions and talents for
social justice with her religious commitment. On April 7, Kirby along with
nine other deaconess candidates and one home missioner, were commissioned to
devote their lives to Christlike service.

Ecumenical commission considers its future

NEW YORK (UMNS) — The United Methodist Church’s ecumenical commission has
approved proposals for its future that would either maintain its current
status but drastically reduce the board of directors or fold the group and
its work into the denomination’s Council of Bishops. The commission “was and
is willing to lose its life if we can find a new and better way to organize
the ecumenical ministries of the church,” says its top executive.

Asian Christians to assess relief needs in Japan

TOKYO (UMNS) — A 14-person delegation is set to arrive in Japan on April 11
to meet with Christians there and assess relief operations in the Sendai
area in the hopes of sending future work teams. The group includes leaders
of member churches in the National Council of Churches in Korea, said
Claudia Genung-Yamamoto, a United Methodist missionary, along with one
representative each from the Hong Kong Council of Churches and Presbyterian
   Church in Taiwan.

On April 7, Japan suffered its strongest aftershock since the March 11
earthquake and tsunami, prompting a new tsunami alert, later canceled, and
concerns about further damage to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. The
aftershock, with an epicenter 41 miles from Sendai, was measured at 7.1 by
the U.S. Geological Survey, killed at least three people and injured others.

Bill Cosby celebrates Lambuth University

JACKSON, Tenn. (UMNS) — When Bill Cosby strolled on stage at the Carl
Perkins Civic Center on April 5, he was not wearing his signature colorful
sweater for which he was known on his 1980s TV hit, “The Cosby Show.” The
comedian, 73, wore a Lambuth University blue athletic jacket — a reminder to
the audience that the evening’s entertainment was also about raising money
for the financially troubled United Methodist-related school. The school
also showcased its commitment to Christianity in [19]a video titled “Jar
   Fillers.”

Clarification: Leadership Summit tackles church future

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — Thousands of United Methodists tuned in to the
Leadership Summit webcast. Rather than reaching 1,000 sites, the three-hour
event attracted more than 4,000 web connections.
