"I'm all for the oral call-and-response (singing). I think a lot of times,
we focus on the paper and not really think about the words. ... If the words
are in our minds and our hearts, then it means more to us. And we express
the words better than just singing what we read." - Jeremy Carter, United
   Methodist director of music.

Study shows how black churches use music

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Music stirs worshippers' souls and moves their feet each
Sunday morning at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. The experience at
Wesley Chapel is common to many other predominantly African-American United
Methodist congregations, according to a newly released study. For many of
the churches, sacred music is what keeps people coming to worship. But the
study also shows that the songs need not come from a hymnal. The United
Methodist Board of Discipleship and United Methodist News Service
   contributed to this story.

Ohio churches propel Vietnam mission

STAMFORD, Conn. (UMNS) - The Rev. Joseph Bishman loves motorcycles so much
that he's ridden nationally on behalf of Harley-Davidson. So it seemed only
natural for the United Methodist West Ohio Annual (regional) Conference to
ask the 62-year-old Shawnee District superintendent to hold a motorcycle
ride for Vietnam mission work. What was unexpected was what happened next,
he told the Board of Global Ministries directors.

Leadership Summit survey results now online

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - Results of the Leadership Summit survey are now
online. The survey deals with the findings of the [20]Call to Action
Steering Team, and asks respondents the denomination's priorities. More than
920 people responded to the survey following the April 6 Leadership Summit
webcast on how the church can foster vital congregations.

Drew installs seminary's first Asian-American dean

MADISON, N.J. (UMNS) - Drew University, a United Methodist-related school,
has installed the Rev. Kah-Jin Jeffrey Kuan as dean of the university's
Theological School. Kuan, originally from Malaysia, is the first
Asian-American dean of a United Methodist seminary.

The installation ceremony was April 8 at the university's Craig Chapel. The
service included a performance by Drew's Korean Men's Choir; a special hymn,
"We Abide," composed for the occasion by lyricist Laurie Zelman and the
school's music director, Mark Miller; and the presentation of gifts from The
United Methodist Church and Drew faculty, staff, students and alumni.

United Methodists fight Red River floods

FARGO, N.D. (UMNS) - In recent weeks, United Methodist volunteers in the
Dakotas and Minnesota have spent long hours piling sandbags to stem
floodwaters along the Red River and other area bodies of water. Other church
members have prepared food for hungry volunteers and distributed blankets to
those in need. Bishop Deborah Lieder Kiesey has also offered a [23]message
to Dakotas Annual (regional) Conference members, reminding them that they
are not alone in this fight to save people's homes. The Red River crested in
Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn., during the weekend at more than 38
feet, the fourth-highest flood on record.
