“In the early period, and even still today, it could be argued that Easter
was the most important day on the church calendar.”
             - The Rev. Taylor Burton-Edwards, United Methodist
                           Board of Discipleship.

Ancient traditions still influence Easter

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - Christians journeying through Holy Week may be
surprised to learn how some Easter traditions have evolved over the
centuries. It was not until the eighth century A.D. that Christians started
using the word “Easter” to describe a day set aside to celebrate Jesus’
Resurrection. Originally, the name referred to a festival honoring Eastre,
the Teutonic goddess of light and spring — whose symbol, by the way, was an
   egg.

After storms’ pounding, churches respond

TUSHKA, Okla. (UMNS) - United Methodists are opening their hearts, their
wallets and their doors to people affected by last week’s violent storms
that cut across 14 Southern states. In many states, assessments for possible
   relief efforts are just beginning.

Passion plays unite believers across centuries

PITTSBURGH - Each year, churches and other groups stage Lenten dramas
depicting Jesus' final days on earth and his Resurrection. They're most
frequently called Passion plays, a reference to the Passion — the mental,
spiritual and physical suffering — that Jesus experienced between the night
of the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. The plays are “a way to move people
closer to God during Lent," says Cindy Olszewski, of Christ United Methodist
Church in Bethel Park, in a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review story.

Scholars benefit from mission agency grants

STAMFORD, Conn. (UMNS) - A total of $1.2 million in educational awards
approved by directors of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries
will benefit 224 students from 50 countries.

Slightly more than $452,000 of the grant total is for World Communion
Scholars (formerly Crusade Scholars), who benefit from the annual World
Communion offering in United Methodist congregations. This program aids
international and U.S. racial/ethnic minority people in attaining master or
doctoral degrees in fields including medicine, education, law and theology.
The other scholarship funds come from endowed trusts and the budget of
Global Ministries, the denomination's worldwide mission agency.

Lambuth University to cease operation June 30

JACKSON, Tenn. (UMNS) - Lambuth University will cease academic operation as
of June 30. The 168-year-old United Methodist-related school has struggled
financially for several years and was suing to appeal a December 2010
decision by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to remove the
   school’s accreditation.

A transition team will work with other interested higher education
institutions to ensure the Lambuth campus “remains an educational
facility,” the school said. Lambuth will formulate agreements with other
higher education institutions to provide students the opportunity to
complete their degrees. Lambuth’s spring commencement is scheduled for April
30, with 65 students expected to receive diplomas.
