“It really tears me apart that I am either going to have to go back home to
live or go somewhere five, six or nine hours away. From every perspective
Lambuth was just the perfect place for me.” – Nick Nelson, Lambuth student

Lambuth students ‘torn apart’ by school closing

JACKSON, Tenn. (UMNS) — Nick Nelson’s dreams were coming true when he won a
bishop’s scholarship from The United Methodist Church's Memphis Annual
(regional) Conference for full tuition at Lambuth University last year. Then
came some shocking news: Lambuth was closing its doors. Nelson is one of
more than 400 students who will be looking for another college after June 30
when the 168-year-old United Methodist-related university ceases operation.

Which came first: Easter or the eggs?

For most Christians, Easter is the most important day of the year. However,
when it comes to traditions such as decorated eggs, lilies and Peter
Cottontail, even the most seasoned Easter celebrants may have questions.

A year after Gulf spill, healing begins

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (UMNS) — Grants from the United Methodist Committee on
Relief have helped the denomination’s Alabama-West Florida Annual (regional)
Conference assist those affected last spring by the BP oil spill in the
Gulf. The response includes the “Project Rebound” initiative of Gulf Shores
   United Methodist Church.

Blog: Connecting as one to achieve a miracle

NEW YORK (UMNS) — In her blog, UMNS reporter Linda Bloom wonders whether the
idea of treating a district of small churches as if they were all part of
one congregation — a concept used successfully to raise funds for mission in
Ohio — could be one of the solutions to the denomination’s rural church
   crisis.

                                                           [23]Read blog»

Funding needed for global theological education

ATLANTA (UMNS) — Funding theological education outside the United States is
essential for The United Methodist Church, according to church leaders from
four continents who attended a conference about global theological
education. One possibility is to create a separate churchwide apportioned
fund to financially support theological education in the central conferences
and missionary areas. Another suggestion is that the Ministerial Education
Fund, the apportioned fund that supports the 13 United Methodist theological
schools in the United States, be broadened to provide funding for
   institutions in the central conference.

Dates set for Pre-General Conference News Briefing

TAMPA, Fla. (UMNS) — United Methodist Communications has set Jan. 19-21,
2012, as the dates for the Pre-General Conference News Briefing. The
briefing is held every four years before the denomination’s top lawmaking
assembly convenes. Communicators and leaders of delegations to General
Conference are brought together for a two-day orientation and
information-sharing workshop on issues that will be discussed at the
assembly. The January briefing at the Tampa Convention Center will include a
tour of the facility. More details will be forthcoming.

Correction: Trial of lesbian elder rescheduled

An item in yesterday’s digest incorrectly capitalized the name of the Rev.
Amy DeLong, who faces a church trial in Wisconsin. DeLong also registered
with her partner of nearly 16 years under Wisconsin’s domestic partnership
law. Yesterday’s brief incorrectly said conference instead of law.
