"To be a human is to suffer and die (among other things). Christ's death was
not only a 'substitution' for the death that humans owe for sin - that is
only part of the story. His whole life - including his suffering and death -
was his holy sacrifice." - The Rev. Ted Campbell, church history professor
   at Southern Methodist University.

Did Jesus descend into hell or to the dead?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - The long-debated phrase in the Apostles' Creed
offers one possible answer to what Jesus did between Good Friday and Easter.
And it tells us something about God, say church scholars.

Ambassador praises hospital in Sierra Leone

BO, Sierra Leone (UMNS) - The U.S. ambassador's enthusiasm for The United
Methodist Church's health-care and humanitarian efforts was obvious when he
emerged from Mercy Hospital's research lab. The United Methodist Church,
which has three major hospitals and four health centers in the country, is
among Sierra Leone's key health-service providers.

Setting the Scene: Jesus' Last Day

LEAWOOD, Kan. (UMNS) - When we think of the final day of Jesus' life, it is
easy to imagine his suffering. Mel Gibson and a host of others have helped
us visualize it in ways the Gospel writers only hint at. What is harder for
some is to see themselves in the story, writes the Rev. Adam Hamilton,
founding pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in
   Leawood.

'NCIS' actress joins church's malaria fight

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - [21]Imagine No Malaria, a ministry of The United
Methodist Church, welcomes actress Pauley Perrette to its growing community
of supporters working to reduce deaths caused by malaria.

Perrette, 42, is well known for playing Abby Sciuto, her character on the
hit CBS TV show "NCIS." Perrette, an active member of Hollywood United
Methodist Church in California, has agreed to take on a new role to raise
awareness and money to fight the disease.

Perrette's support for Imagine No Malaria includes starring in several
public service announcements, calling for action and generosity in the fight
   against malaria.

She will also provide the narration for the ministry's upcoming TV special
called "[22]A Killer in the Dark: An Extraordinary Effort to Combat
Malaria." The program, which will air on many NBC affiliates May 1 (check
local listings), documents the daily struggle in Africa against malaria and
highlights the work of Imagine No Malaria to wipe out a devastating disease
that's killing 2,000 people every single day. The program is presented by
the National Council of Churches under the auspices of the Interfaith
Broadcasting Commission and produced by [23]United Methodist
   Communications.

Meals for Haiti spared when tornado hits N.C. warehouse

SNOW HILL, N.C. (UMNS) - A warehouse used by United Methodist partner Stop
Hunger Now sustained major damage during the round of tornados on April 16.
But a shipment of the hunger relief agency's packaged meals bound for Haiti
   was miraculously undamaged.

Some meals were shipped on April 20, and Stop Hunger Now has found a
temporary storage space while its warehouse is repaired. More meals will be
shipped to Haiti in coming weeks, Neill Caldwell, editor of the Virginia
   Annual (regional) Conference Advocate, reports.
