It’s an amazing thing that I will never forget.”— Rebecca Evanoff, who helped carry her church’s new cross on Good Friday. UMTV: Good Friday Cross Journey NORTH CANTON, Ohio (UMTV) — The Rev. Don Richards cut down a tree in his yard and got an idea for a unique way to make a public witness. He had the tree shaped into a giant cross and invited members of his church, Grace United Methodist, and other neighbors to carry the 14-foot, 425-pound cross on a 14-mile journey. Participants say they experienced the Easter story on a deeper level. This year, Ohio Wesleyan University has honored that history with the release of a new video telling the story of the two men’s collaboration and the incident in Rickey’s life that inspired him to risk everything to help integrate professional sports. In 1903, Rickey was a student and baseball coach at Ohio Wesleyan when he witnessed university player Charles Thomas’ despair at being refused lodging in the same hotel as his white teammates. The moment changed Rickey’s life forever. [17]Watch video» Advisory: Haiti sacrifices inspire journey of faith It has been more than a year since the Haiti earthquake took the lives of thousands of people, including United Methodist church workers Sam Dixon and Clinton Rabb. On April 28, United Methodist News Service will post a narrative report focusing on the faith journeys of Suzanne Rabb and Cindy Dixon, the spouses of the two men, and that of Nancy Gulley, whose husband survived the quake. “Haiti sacrifices inspire journey of faith” by former UMNS editor David Briggs, will be posted on [18]www.UMC.org.
