“In a catastrophic situation such as this, we are no longer divided by
religious affiliation or economic status. Rather, we are one body of
believers struggling to move forward.” — Alabama-West Florida Bishop Paul L.
   Leeland.

Tornadoes destroy churches, but not spirit

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UMNS) — After at least 100 tornadoes ripped through much
of the southern United States, United Methodists are picking up the pieces
as search-and-rescue efforts continue in the hardest-hit areas. “I have been
moved by the outpouring of grief, prayers and offers for help from
Methodists all over the connection,” says Birmingham Area Bishop William H.
   Willimon.

Cash, not clothes, needed

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UMNS) — What is the best way to help in the wake of
disasters such as the tornadoes and floods that seem to be in the headlines
daily? Should you clean out your closet and hope your castoffs will be just
   what people need?
The answer, quite simply, is “no.”

According to the Outfit to Go website, after Hurricane Katrina in 2005,
piles of donated clothing were moldering along roadsides and parking lots in
coastal Mississippi. After the Haiti earthquake, one U.S. town sent three
trailer-truck loads of clothing to the island nation. Outfit to Go says it
takes three days to sort and prepare the items in a tractor-trailer load of
clothing – and usually at least half of the donations are unusable.

Money is the most useful. The United Methodist Committee on Relief, the
denomination’s relief agency, is taking donations to help with the storm
   recovery across the United States.

Easter brings hope for Ivorian Church

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire (UMNS) — Easter and resurrection took on new meaning
this year for Ivorian United Methodists, as their country began emerging
from four months of post-election violence.

Young people’s images sought for General Conference

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — The Young People’s Ministries division of the
United Methodist Board of Discipleship is soliciting videos and images
reflecting the diverse ministries of the church’s youth and young adults.
The material will be featured in a presentation at the 2012 General
Conference in Tampa, Fla. The division also is seeking two young people to
   host the presentation.

One-minute videos or pictures with narration about youth/young people’s
ministries are due by Oct. 31; applications for on-stage presenters are due
   by Aug. 1.

UMCOR hosts Haiti reconstruction forum

NEW YORK (UMNS) – The United Methodist Committee on Relief is convening a
four-day forum through April 29 to focus on reconstruction and clean-water
supply in Haiti. The goal is to form partnerships to rebuild homes and
provide access to clean water by the end of 2011 for 40 displaced Haitian
   families.
