“The hope of the Resurrection, of new life, that’s what I really think of.
He was raised from the dead. Because of that, we all have hope.” — Cindy
   Dixon.

Haiti sacrifices inspire spouses’ faith journeys

DRIFTWOOD, Texas (UMNS) — Three women – Suzanne Rabb, Cindy Dixon and Nancy
Gulley – are witnesses to a contemporary Easter journey. Rabb and Dixon lost
their spouses in the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and Gulley’s husband narrowly
escaped death. Like the women who encountered the risen Jesus, they have
fresh stories to tell of the Resurrection that is at the center of their
   faith.

Prayers, volunteers sustain storm survivors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UMNS) — Less than 48 hours after dozens of tornadoes tore
through the U.S. South, United Methodists are gearing up for long-term, as
well as immediate, recovery. As of 8 a.m., April 29, the death toll in
Alabama alone stood at 210. The Rev. Matt Lacey, director of mission and
advocacy for the North Alabama Annual (regional) Conference, was
“overwhelmed” by hundreds of phone calls and emails offering help during the
   recovery process.

First Holy Week a busy one for new clergy

LINCOLN, Neb. (UMNS) — Easter worship brings out the pastel dresses, big
hats and CEOs — short for “Christmas and Easter Only,” the folks who make it
to church twice a year. It’s a busy day and the end of a busy season.
However, the Revs. Stacey Harwell and Mara Bailey took Easter in stride.
This is the [20]eighth installment of a yearlong series that is following
newly appointed United Methodist clergy as they begin their ministry.

Anti-malaria video debuts in Times Square

NEW YORK (UMNS) — A video message from The United Methodist Church’s Imagine
No Malaria campaign is being shown in Times Square every hour through July
   5. The 15-second message underscores the urgency of fighting the disease,
which kills nearly a million people annually.

“The video links malaria’s tragic toll with our ability to make an impact by
using a mobile device to make a donation,” said the Rev. Larry Hollon, top
executive of United Methodist Communications. “It’s truly an amazing
opportunity to save a life with something as simple as a text message.”

A $10 donation can be given by sending a text message with the word
“MALARIA” to 27722. Messaging and data rates may apply.

United Methodist Council of Bishops to meet

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (UMNS) — More than 100 United Methodist bishops from
Africa, Europe, Asia and the United States will gather for the semiannual
Council of Bishops meeting May 1-6. The meeting will include reports from
the Call to Action interim operations team and consideration of a proposed
restructuring of the denomination’s ecumenical agency. Look for United
Methodist News Service coverage of the meeting in the coming week.
