(UMNS) — Four United Methodists were among the religious leaders calling on President Obama to take bold actions for peace between Israel and Palestine. Raúl B. Alegría of MARCHA, the United Methodist Hispanic Caucus; Harriett Jane Olson, Women’s Division, United Methodist Board of Global Ministries; the Rev. John McCullough, Church World Service, and Bishop Sharon Zimmerman Rader, the Council of Bishops ecumenical officer, signed the June 27 letter, which asks the president to issue a comprehensive statement before the U.N. General Assembly convenes this fall. [21]Read letter» Certified Lay Ministers meet in Pittsburgh PITTSBURGH (UMNS) — Certified Lay Ministers of The United Methodist Church had their first national gathering June 24-26 in Pittsburgh, sponsored by the United Methodist Rural Fellowship in partnership with the Northeastern Jurisdiction Town & Country network. “The current movement to use Certified Lay Ministers is, in many respects, a return to our roots,” said the Rev. Roger Grace, the rural fellowship president. “It is a recognition that by working together, the laity and the clergy can accomplish much more than clergy alone can do.
