“I couldn’t have asked for a better place to have started my official
ministry. I think New Bethel really thinks of themselves as a place that
makes or breaks pastors. I think in some sense it is true, that it is a
great learning ground.” — The Rev. Brian Rossbert, Tennessee pastor
   completing his first appointment.

Young pastors prepare for season of change

PEGRAM, Tenn. (UMNS) — Many United Methodist pastors in the summer say
goodbye to one congregation and prepare for a new start in another church in
their annual (regional) conference. Among them is the Rev. Brian Rossbert, a
young pastor moving to his second appointment.

Does the Star-Spangled Banner belong in church?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) —Practicing patriotism in church can be a sticky
   issue. The Interpreter
magazine reports on what United Methodists feel is the appropriate use of
the U.S. flag in church sanctuaries.

Volunteers caring for soldiers

DULUTH, Ga. (UMNS) — It is easy to feel patriotic on Memorial Day and the
Fourth of July. But how do Americans keep the patriotic flame glowing for
the other 363 days of the year? Thanks to Hugs for Soldiers, an
all-volunteer program started by a member of Duluth First United Methodist
Church, people can support the military and their families all year long,
   the Tucker Patch reports.

Religious leaders ask Obama for ‘bold actions’ on Middle East

WASHINGTON, D.C. (UMNS) — Four United Methodists were among the religious
leaders calling on President Obama to take bold actions for peace between
Israel and Palestine. Raúl B. Alegría of MARCHA, the United Methodist
Hispanic Caucus; Harriett Jane Olson, Women’s Division, United Methodist
Board of Global Ministries; the Rev. John McCullough, Church World Service,
and Bishop Sharon Zimmerman Rader, the Council of Bishops ecumenical
officer, signed the June 27 letter, which asks the president to issue a
comprehensive statement before the U.N. General Assembly convenes this
   fall.

Certified Lay Ministers meet in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (UMNS) — Certified Lay Ministers of The United Methodist Church
had their first national gathering June 24-26 in Pittsburgh, sponsored by
the United Methodist Rural Fellowship in partnership with the Northeastern
Jurisdiction Town & Country network. “The current movement to use Certified
Lay Ministers is, in many respects, a return to our roots,” said the Rev.
Roger Grace, the rural fellowship president. “It is a recognition that by
working together, the laity and the clergy can accomplish much more than
clergy alone can do. It also acknowledges that in this time of emphasis on
leadership development, care needs to be given to developing lay leadership
   as well as clergy.”
