[July 7, 2011] Prayers are asked as July 9 will bring the emergence of two  
nations - Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan.

"Our heartfelt prayers are with all the people of Sudan as the 9th of July  
approaches," noted Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Sch 
ori.  "We pray for peace as this new nation seeks to establish itself."

"Prayers are needed as Sudan prepares for independence," noted the Rev. Can on 
Petero A.N. Sabune, Episcopal Church Africa Officer. "There are reports  of 
violence, and we need to support the Sudanese as they move forward."

In January, the Sudanese voted overwhelming for secession, with over 98% of  
the voters casting ballots in favor of the establishing of two nations.

Sabune will be in Sudan on July 9, representing the Episcopal Church and br 
inging greetings from the Presiding Bishop. "The Episcopal Church stands in  
solidarity with the people of the Republic of South Sudan," Sabune noted.

"The establishment of a separate nation of South Sudan brings new hope and  
pride to the peoples of that region," Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori note d. 
"It brings lament to some in the north, both those who have depended on  the 
abundant natural resources of the south, and those who have family rela 
tionships there. We give thanks for the courageous decision by the Episcopa l 
Church of Sudan to maintain its unity across the new national borders, an d we 
continue to pray for those living in the midst of violence in the stil l 
contested areas of Abyei, South Kordofan, and the Nuba Mountains."

At its June meeting, the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church approved  a 
resolution expressing solidarity with the Episcopal Church of Sudan and  urged 
necessary intervention by the United States, and asks Episcopalians t o 
continue in prayer.

>About Sudan

Sudan is Africa's largest country by area, and the tenth largest country in  
the world. Its modern history has been characterized by long periods of co 
nflict, especially since gaining independence from Great Britain in 1956, w hen 
the largely Muslim north and the more ethnically diverse south were uni fied 
into a single Sudan. Two long civil wars between north and south, each  lasting 
approximately two decades, finally gave way in early 2005 to a Com prehensive 
Peace Agreement (CPA) aimed at creating two parallel systems of  governance 
within a unified, democratic nation.

The CPA sought to give southern Sudan political autonomy for six years - un til 
2011 - at which point a referendum on secession was to be allowed in th e south.

As the date of independence approaches new difficulties arose in the key di 
sputed regions of Abyei and the Nuba mountains. Raids have taken a particul ar 
toll on the Episcopal Church of Sudan, whose Diocese of Kadugli and the  Nuba 
Mountains saw its cathedral burned, its church members killed and disp laced, 
and its property destroyed.

The Episcopal Church of Sudan (ECS), based in the southern capital of Juba,  
has more than 4 million members and is one of South Sudan's largest civil- 
society institutions. Led by its primate, Archbishop Daniel Deng Bul, the E CS 
has been a longstanding and outspoken voice for peace and reconciliation  in 
its troubled land.

[7 de julio 2011] Se piden oraciones ya que 9 de julio surgirán dos nacio nes: 
Sudán y la República de Sudán del Sur.

"Oramos sinceramente por todo el pueblo de Sudán al acercarse el 9 de jul io", 
señaló la Obispa Presidente de la Iglesia Episcopal Katharine Jeff erts Schori. 
"Oramos por la paz cuando esta nueva nación trata de estable cerse".

"Las oraciones son necesarias cuando Sudán se prepara para la independenc ia", 
señaló el reverendo Canon Petero A.N. Sabune, Oficial de África  en la Iglesia 
Episcopal. "Hay informes de violencia y tenemos que apoyar a  los sudaneses a 
medida que progresan".

En enero, los sudaneses votaron abrumadoramente a favor de la secesión, c on 
más del 98% de los votantes que emitieron su voto en favor del estable cimiento 
de dos naciones.

Sabune estará en Sudán el 9 de julio, en representación de la Iglesia  
Episcopal y llevará el saludo de la Obispa Presidente. "La Iglesia Episc opal 
se solidariza con el pueblo de la República de Sudán del Sur", se ñaló Sabune.

Iglesia Episcopal de Sudán de mantener su unidad a trav és de las nuevas 
fronteras nacionales, y seguimos orando por aquellos que  viven en medio de la 
violencia en las áreas todavía controvertidas de  Abyei, Kordofán del Sur, y 
las Montañas Nuba".

En la reunión de junio, el Consejo Ejecutivo de la Iglesia Episcopal apro bó 
una resolución expresando solidaridad con la Iglesia Episcopal de Su dán e 
instó a la intervención necesaria de Estados Unidos, y pidió  a episcopales a 
que continúe en la oración.

Sobre Sudán

Sudán es en extensión el mayor país de África, y el décimo más  grande del 
mundo. Su historia moderna se ha caracterizado por largos perí odos de 
conflicto, sobre todo desde que se independizó de Gran Bretaña  en 1956, cuando 
la mayoría musulmana del norte y el más étnicamente d iverso sur se unificaron 
en un solo Sudán. Dos largas guerras civiles ent re el norte y el sur, con una 
de aproximadamente dos décadas de duració n, finalmente dieron paso, a 
principios de 2005, a un Acuerdo de Paz Global  (CPA), destinado a la creación 
de dos sistemas paralelos de gobierno en  una nación democrática unida.

El acuerdo (CPA) quiso dar al sur de Sudán la autonomía política dura nte seis 
años - hasta 2011 - momento en el que se permitiría en el sur  un referéndum 
sobre la secesión.

Al acercarse la  fecha de la independencia surgieron nuevas dificultades en  
las principales regiones en disputa de Abyei y las montañas de Nuba. Las  
redadas se han hecho sentir especialmente en la Iglesia Episcopal de Sud án, 
cuya Diócesis de Kadugli y las montañas de Nuba, vio como se quem aba su 
catedral, se mataba y desplazaba a sus miembros y se destruían sus  propiedades.

La Iglesia Episcopal de Sudán (ECS), con sede en la capital del sur de Ju ba, 
tiene más de 4 millones de miembros y es una de las instituciones m ás grandes 
del Sur de Sudán. Encabezada por su primado, el arzobispo Da niel Deng Bul, la 
Iglesia Episcopal de Sudán ha sido desde hace mucho una  voz  a favor de la paz 
y la reconciliación en su turbulenta tierra.
