“Unless we act together for change globally, it won’t happen. South Africa
is a very good example of that.” – Bishop Ivan Abrahams, nominee to head the
   World Methodist Council

Child of apartheid to lead World Methodists

NEW YORK (UMNS) — Born in 1956 under South Africa’s apartheid system, Bishop
Ivan Abrahams was 7 years old when his family was forced to move from a
section of Capetown suddenly declared a whites-only area. His classification
by the government as a “colored” person both stereotyped him and limited his
choices. Those early experiences spurred his involvement in justice
ministries, says the nominee to be the next general secretary of the World
   Methodist Council.

Arkansans bring pain relief to Uganda

KOCH COROMA, Uganda (UMNS) — A mobile health clinic from Arkansas stopped in
northern Uganda for two days in June and treated a total of 436 patients –
64 of them dental and 372 medical. “We’ve kept going back to the same place
so we really understand what the needs are,” said Jody Farrell, the team
leader. “People remember us. We’ve built relationships.”

Meal packaging will mark Nelson Mandela Day

RALEIGH, N.C. (UMNS) — [19]Stop Hunger Now, a United Methodist partner, and
its South African business partners expect to package a record 300,000 meals
to fight hunger on July 18 to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day.
Old Mutual, a financial services company, will sponsor 73,700 meals with
1,000 employees each volunteering 67 minutes of their work time to package
meals. Food retailer Pick ’n Pay will package 114,000 meals throughout its
offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria and Port Elizabeth.
On July 15, property group Growthpoint will package 55,000 meals.
Long-standing Stop Hunger Now supporter First National Bank will also
sponsor a packaging event on that day. Clothing retailers Foschini will
   package an additional 67,000 meals.

Interfaith immigration group seeks DREAM Sabbath

WASHINGTON (UMNS) — Religious leaders announced plans for DREAM Sabbath, a
faith-based campaign to encourage congregations to focus a worship service
on the DREAM Act, which would provide undocumented students with an
opportunity to earn legal status. Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick
Durbin, D-Ill., and the Interfaith Immigration Coalition unveiled the plan.
The campaign will begin Sept. 18 and continue through Oct. 9. The Interfaith
Immigration Coalition is organizing the campaign with support from United We
Dream. “These young men and women are not strangers. They have grown up in
our communities. They are making our country a better place now and for
generations to come,” said Phoenix Area Bishop Minerva Minerva Carcaño.
