His classification by the government as a “colored” person both stereotyped him and limited his choices. Those early experiences spurred his involvement in justice ministries, says the nominee to be the next general secretary of the World Methodist Council. [17]Read full story and post a comment» Arkansans bring pain relief to Uganda KOCH COROMA, Uganda (UMNS) — A mobile health clinic from Arkansas stopped in northern Uganda for two days in June and treated a total of 436 patients – 64 of them dental and 372 medical. “We’ve kept going back to the same place so we really understand what the needs are,” said Jody Farrell, the team leader. “People remember us. (UMNS) — [19]Stop Hunger Now, a United Methodist partner, and its South African business partners expect to package a record 300,000 meals to fight hunger on July 18 to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day. Old Mutual, a financial services company, will sponsor 73,700 meals with 1,000 employees each volunteering 67 minutes of their work time to package meals. Food retailer Pick ’n Pay will package 114,000 meals throughout its offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria and Port Elizabeth. On July 15, property group Growthpoint will package 55,000 meals. Long-standing Stop Hunger Now supporter First National Bank will also sponsor a packaging event on that day. Clothing retailers Foschini will package an additional 67,000 meals. Interfaith immigration group seeks DREAM Sabbath WASHINGTON (UMNS) — Religious leaders announced plans for DREAM Sabbath, a faith-based campaign to encourage congregations to focus a worship service on the DREAM Act, which would provide undocumented students with an opportunity to earn legal status. Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and the Interfaith Immigration Coalition unveiled the plan. The campaign will begin Sept. 18 and continue through Oct. 9. The Interfaith Immigration Coalition is organizing the campaign with support from United We Dream. “These young men and women are not strangers. They have grown up in our communities.
