More children in poverty not a surprise WASHINGTON (UMNS) - Last month, the Annie E. Casey Foundation reported that another 2.4 million children joined the ranks of the U.S. poor during the past decade. Last week, the U.S. Census Bureau announced it counted the highest total of Americans living below the poverty line in the 52 years the bureau has tracked such data. For church members involved with food pantries and after-school programs, the reports mirror what they have been seeing. When Kalob Thomas, 15, and six other United Methodist teens were confirmed this spring in Des Lacs and Minot, N.D., they anticipated a summer of earning extra money, learning to drive or just relaxing. [18]Read full story and post a comment» Candler celebrates Reformation Day ATLANTA (UMNS) - United Methodist-related Candler School of Theology at Emory University will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible and will welcome one of the world's most prominent theologians, Jürgen Moltmann, to campus for its 24th annual Reformation Day celebration Oct. 27. Moltmann's presentation will be at 3:30 p.m. in Cannon Chapel. [19]Read more» Agency advocates for 'Second Chance' law WASHINGTON (UMNS) - Clergy representing diverse faith traditions from eight states will take part in a briefing Sept. 22 to underscore the importance of programming for women and men re-entering the community following incarceration. The luncheon briefing in the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill is being hosted by the United Methodist Board of Church and Society in collaboration with the Faith in Action Working Group, and the offices of Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Rob Portman, R-Ohio. The Second Chance Reauthorization Act of 2011, recently introduced by Leahy and Portman, will be the focus of the briefing.
